Simply Excellent smartphone at a sub-$100 price

As far as Smartphones are concerned, I have been a dinosaur in that I kept using an old AT&T feature phone till a few weeks ago. The odd thing is that it actually met all my phone needs and I didn't really need a higher-end phone. However, I thought I could get a smartphone that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and come into the 21st century. The issue was also partially forced by the fact that I switched recently to a Chromebook for all my computing needs and needed a way to sync my Fitbit device since the device does not have a driver for the ChromeOS. I had a choice between Windows or Apple or Android phones because all three provide the Fitbit app. I chose an Android phone because I thought it will be a smoother switch between an Android phone and a Chromebook as they are both Google products. This Moto E phone is amazingly low-priced at under $100 and I simply ordered one without even doing much research on it.

I am extremely pleased with this phone. It has exceeded all my expectations and even needs. It is lightweight and so quite easy to carry around on my travels. The sound quality is quite good for the calls as well as listening to music. The switch between the apps and the browser is instantaneous and hence a delight. I was surprised by how good the WiFi connect is and how sustained it is. The display is the stand-out feature of this phone and I have watched Netflix documentaries on it and am simply blown by the quality of the picture.

I am not a power-user of the phone in general. I have used it with great satisfaction in art galleries and museums as a guide to the paintings and sculptures that I am interested in. The text quality is excellent and so I can bring up the experts' assessment of a painting or sculpture through the Chrome browser and enjoy my visit to the museum that much better. I bought the phone to partially use as a portable computer and it has fulfilled that role very well. The FM radio is quite handy and lets me keep up with my favorite NPR station.

Since I am new to smartphones, I find that the apps in the Google Play store are more than enough for my needs. It is a good idea to read the manual on the web to learn more about the features of the phone, especially to optimize the usage of the battery so that it will last a couple of days for someone who is not an intensive user. I have not used the camera and Bluetooth much to comment on them. If you use Lastpass as a password manager for all your sites, you have a slight problem as Lastpass provides only the Premium version on smartphones and so you will be forced to spend about $12 for Lastpass annually.

Can't believe how good this phone is for $80

Bought this for my boyfriend. The water resistance was a big factor. I actually like it more than he does, but he doesn't really care much about technology. I was impressed that such a cheap phone performs almost as well as my $300 Zenfone2. The camera is not great and doesn't have a flash, but that wasn't important to us. It takes decent pictures outside during the day, which is what we really like. It's very fast. I can't figure out how to delete the empty home pages. It takes a few swipes and clicks to get to the setting to turn on the data/wifi.

Tl:dr; great phone for the price. Would recommend to anyone who is low maintenance and just wants a smart phone that will work fast and do smart phone things without all the bells and whistles.

Moto E is a great smartphone for the price

An overall decent phone. Keeping expectations in check, this phone suffices. Moto E forces you to consider its good quality and current low cost.

Cons: Poor camera quality and lack of LED flash; front-facing lens. Screen resolution is adequate but lacking compared to higher-end phones, if you've experienced one, of course. 3G-only but does use T-Mobile HSPA+ (H) and provides good-enough speeds.

Pros: Attractive design and build quality is better than expected for a now-sub-$100 phone. Screen quality is good but may seem lacking as competition in this price-range catches up. Decent resolution and brightness, colors are good but a little too warm. Battery life! Although not as good as the first generation Moto G in my experience. Still excellent. Running on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Not what i expected for budget phone

Amazing phone, not what I expected ! (I'll probably make a lot of mistakes because English is not my native so i apologize in advance) the biggest advantage of this phone is not the price, but what you actually get for the price: please notice that this phone should be mainly used as a PHONE not a weird pocket gaming console or portable PC or some kind of relic of prestige, it is designed to pack everything you NEED the most, without loss of quality.

Design and hardware:
Pros: the weight/size ratio of the phone is superb for me, its back cover design is very ergonomic, some people find it to be heavy but i like the weight, it makes you feel that you are actually holding something. the screen is superb, it is truly scratch resistant, display quality is also great, you won't notice any pixels unless you use magnifying glass to look at it for some reason, packing more ppi pixel density into display doesn't make sense to me, what's the difference if the eye sees almost the same image? (unless you are casting your phone screen on HDtv for some reason) because it packs less pixels than high end displays, it also needs less powerful gpu to make everything work, so i do not consider adreno 302 chip to be a drawback. neither dual core cpu, which also handles software easily. the micro sd slot is very useful, i prefer using sd card over internal memory because you can easily remove card and plug it into something else, and because sd cards are so cheap and easy to get, adding about 15 $ will get you a phone with 4(internal) +32gb memory. phone has 1 Gb of ram, android 4.4.4 runs with absolutely no lag, amount of background apps can be up to 3-4 without noticeable difference in performance.

cons: the camera. i could debate about this topic, because non-existent selfie camera on front perfectly suits selfies that i never take anyways. I don't like paying for features that i never use, but that's me and absence of front facing camera is drawback for most users. the rear facing camera is a peace of crap. but it is that kind of peace of crap you will find useful anyways, main idea of having camera on phone, in my opinion, is to quickly take it out of your pocket and shoot photo of something special that you really need to. you won't be able to take high resolution photo, but 5 megapixels is enough for small size printing and for most mobile phone screens, i hope that the readers do understand that same camera with 30 megapixels has little to no advantage over 5 megapixels in most cases, if not please read this : http://www.tomsguide.com/us/how-many-megapixels-you-need,review-1974.html aside from megapixels the camera is still a peace of crap. no autofocus - this basically means no 100% sharp images, BUT you wont notice it unless you are taking macro shots. and it is possible to take 100% sharp photos at certain distance from camera, provided that you always have tape measure in your pocket and time to quickly measure distance from your phone to object and only then take photo. !!! forget macro shots, it is simply impossible with this phone. no flash as well. BUT you will be able to take OK and printable photos in well-lit situations, a bit of basic knowledge about photography also helps a lot.

Software:
Phone runs latest android version 4.4.4 and is promised to be compatible with android L, well, that's a BIG deal, for me the most important part of phone is software and apps, and this phone can handle all of it, without noticeable difference in performance compared to other pricey smartphones out there, if you treat it well and limit your use up to 3-4 apps running at the same time, there will be absolutely no difference between this phone and high-end android phones. apps provided by motorola are also useful.

Now for those that never used android phone, you greatly benefit if you are google customer, which i am, and google integration means A LOT for me. my life is so much easier because of it. Final verdict: if you agree with at least most of my review just buy it already, srsly, do it!
