Absolutely love this! :-)

Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge I was worried that this phone would not be as solid all around, especially for the price. WOW was I mistaken. This device far exceeded all of my expectations. It is lightning fast, honestly even faster than the GS7 edge (probably due to the lack of Touchwiz). While I liked the preinstalled "Stock" theme, I went with the Google Now launcher right away and it is even more of a stock feel. The software seems fine so I am not really sure what people are talking about with it not being as clean as something like the One Plus 3.

In regards to the main features to consider, here they are:

1) o_o um... Speakers from Heaven? lol. The sound quality on this phone is completely unmatched. Seriously. I was blown away. Music is crisp and clear, movies sound incredible, YouTube is awesome, etc. All in all, if there is one reason to get this phone, it is because of the crazy sound system. With headphones it sounds like a professional audio experience. Absolutely fantastic.

2) Build quality - Rock solid. No issues, easy to hold, etc. I will say, coming from the GS7 edge it feels a slight bit wider in the hand (due to the lack of the dual edge display), however nowhere near as difficult to hold as the iPhone 6s Plus.

3) Battery life and 3.0 QuickCharge - Awesome battery life, gets through a full day, about 4-5 hours of screen on time. Charges INSANELY fast. I had to buy all QuickCharge 3.0 accessories for other rooms in the house and the car since I got super spoiled with the one that came with it, lol. Charges MUCH faster than the GS7 edge, even with the fast adaptive charger.

4) Screen - Gorgeous, zero issues. If I had ONE complaint about screen related stuff, I would say that the ambient light sensor sucks in comparison to the GS7 edge. It works, but even in a totally dim room it still is pretty bright. All in all, the GS7 edge ambient sensor is way better, but this one still works - just a bit too bright lol

5) Camera - So far, no problems. I REALLY MISS the front facing screen flash (like the iPhone Retina Flash) on the selfie camera the GS7 edge had. I would have loved to have seen this on this phone. There are some apps that claim to do this, but they seem to be iffy if they work. It's usually a hardware thing, so not sure either way. I do miss the selfie flash though. Most of the pics I take are in good lighting so I have had no issues so far.

Now some things I don't completely love:

1) Notifications - On my GS7 edge notifications all worked fine. Some apps, though, I am not getting notifications for unless I open the app. Didn't have this issue on the GS7 edge soooo yeah - weird software quirk.

2) Signal Strength indoors - LTE signal strength not quite as good as the GS7 edge. I had to get T-Mobile signal boosters and that resolved the issue. Still, the LTE radio on the phone is definitely not as strong as the GS7 edge. Wi-Fi is totally fine as is bluetooth.

3) VOLTE = YES : Wi-Fi Calling = NO :-(. While it does have HD Voice, it does not have Wi-Fi calling. If that's important to you, definitely something to consider.

Other than that, it works perfectly! :-)

A flagship killer

Pros:
  • The screen is big, but not too big in my opinion at 5.5". Since it is an amoled screen, the blacks are super rich and the colors are very vibrant. It blows away the screen on an iPhone 6s plus that I compared it to. The viewing angles are very good as well.
  • The audio. This is the new top audiophile phone on the market. It even sounds better than the HTC 10. Dolby atmos may sound like a gimmick, but it actually improves the audio quality significantly. Audio through the headphone jack is better than the HTC 10 in my opinion. The speakers on this phone are unreal. They are super crisp and loud. They are better than a lot of budget (<$30) Bluetooth speakers I've heard.
  • The processor, ram, and gpu are all flagship tier. This phone doesn't lag at all.
  • The option of dual sim or a microsd card. A dual sim is handy for some people, but I feel everyone can appreciate the microsd card slot. This phone already has 64gb of storage, and can accept up to a 256gb microsd card. Great if you download your music and movies.
  • Battery and charging. This phones battery lasts all day, but can also be recharged very quickly with the included quickcharge 3.0 charger. USB C is also a welcome addition. Very good included battery optimization software help increase battery length further. There is no wireless charging, as it is impossible with the aluminum unibody of the phone.
  • Design and build quality. This phone obviously draws inspiration from the iPhone, but that doesn't stop it from having a nice asthetic and flawless build quality. The bezels are also nice and thin while still housing the speakers, camera, and touch capacitive buttons.
  • included accessories. The "ZTE earpods" sound pretty good. A quick charge 3.0 charger is included, along with a 3ft USB type C cable and a microusb to USB type C adapter. A clear case is also included, which stops the phone from slipping in your hands..

Personal preference things:
  • the fingerprint scanner. It's on the back, which is handy except when the phone is laying on a desk. It performs about average as far as fingerprint scanners go.
  • the OS. It still has a few flaws, but I prefer it to stock Android. A couple nifty software features, such as a toolbox(includes a ruler, protractor, level, etc.) and battery optimization software are included. There are only a few gestures, but they are handy. The only one that is missing is a gesture to quickly open up the camera from the lock screen. A lot of reviewers griped about the fact that notifications weren't automatically shown on the lockscreen, but this has been addressed in a software update. The recent apps has a clear all function and also lets apps be locked so you don't accidently close the music app. The wallpapers included are beautiful and also show off the screen very well.
  • the buttons. They aren't back-lit which is obviously a con. A lot of people have a problem with the fact that they are so close together. I think this is actually a very good design choice, as it stops them from accidently being pressed while watching a video. The software also included mi-pop which is basically a little on screen button that lets you access the home, back, and recent app buttons onscreen.
Cons:
  • the camera. This is something that is expected to be mediocre in a mid range phone. Low light quality isn't good. It isn't very proficient at point and shoot, mainly because the auto focus is slow and doesn't focus precisely. However, quality pictures can be taken with manual mode. The lack of a front flash isn't a deal breaker, but it would have been nice. The rear camera is 20MP, so the camera can zoom in a lot. Video is great, however transitioning from areas of differing light levels isn't very smooth. The slo-mo mode works very well.
  • no water resistance. This is a very practical feature, and is sadly only seen on a few high end phones at the moment.
All in all, this phone would be a great value at even $500. This phone can go toe to toe with flagships such as the HTC 10 and Galaxy S7 edge and still come out on top in some areas, at half the cost.

Flagship Quality at Affordable Price

OK, this phone rocks. There's been some concern that the custom MiFavor 4.0 (MUI) interface slows down Android. That's nonsense. This phone is quite fast and multitasks very well. It's been reviewed many times, so I'll just recap my observations:
  1. The display is gorgeous. 2560 x 1440 AMOLED - bright, crisp.
  2. The camera is very fast. My old Nexus 5x had an extremely slow camera (starting up and processing pics). There's very little lag in this one.
  3. Sound - I haven't cranked the volume yet, but two FRONT-facing speakers just make so much sense.
  4. Charging - the included USB-C fast charger really does work very well.
  5. Battery - HOLY $&^%$!!! ... I unplugged the phone at 8:00am this morning. It's now 10:30pm, 14 1/2 hours later. The battery is at 64%. I am not a heavy duty gamer, but I do multitask with social media and I do use some network apps (Office 365 management, Meraki management, Salesforce management, etc.). The battery is really quite impressive.
  6. Build Quality and Presentation - This is a sold phone. It is certainly not as light as an iPhone or other Android phones. That's possibly due to the larger battery or the all-metal build. I'm not a fan of featherweight phones, so this is good for me. Presentation - more companies (i.e. Anker) are presenting their products the way Apple does. The phone is packaged pristinely. Every accessory that you wish a phone came with was included in the box - all power stuff, headphones, sim ejector, even a case, albeit cheap.
Any downsides ? Of course.
  1. The phone is very slick. You WILL need some sort of case or you WILL drop it.
  2. The custom UI is not bad, but may take some getting used to. For instance, creating folders on each screen is a bit tedious, but doable.
  3. The power button is *below* the volume buttons on the right side of the phone. In the beginning you will adjust the volume when trying to just turn the display on. Not the best design, but not a showstopper.
  4. This one is weird and there's probably a fix - I just haven't found it yet. My Nexus 5x allowed me to fit 5 icons across its 5" screen. The ZTE allows only 4 larger icons across a 5.5" screen - weird. Maybe a function of the UI.
  5. The current Android version is 6.01 ZTE says Nougat (7.0 or 7.1) is "coming soon". We'll see. I have no complaints about the current Android version on this phone, though.
Overall, this is a bargain. I got mine for $349. I see it's back up to $399, but I still think it's worth every penny.

Note: I seriously considered the OnePlus 3T, which exceeds the specs of this phone. It's slightly more expensive, but it seems to always be out of stock. Like I said, the ZTE gets very good reviews overall.

Best phone I've ever had

Easily my favorite phone to date. I was on the fence about what phone to get after my old one died and did a ton of research. From all I found, the Axon 7 was the best option with the least likelihood of getting a dud. I was a little hesitant simply due to previous experience with ZTE when they were still building a market in the US, but I'm so glad I took the chance.

Let's start with the packaging. Fully sealed upon arrival with shrink-wrap plastic in pristine condition. The box is beautiful. whoever in marketing had this part of it did a phenomenal job. Opening the box you find the usuals, the phone, charger cable, and power box, but ZTE really went the extra mile and included a clear case (although admittedly it doesn't look like it would provide much protection), a nice set of headphones similar in style to what samsung includes, and 2 screen protectors, one of which is already installed. The screen protectors are very nice and the one that is put on already is easy to miss (I almost did).

As for the phone itself, it's beautiful. Very responsive, no lag, and can handle some fairly heavy use. It comes with Mifavor overlay UI and stock android and you can choose which one you prefer. I like to go with the stock android and have had no problems with it at all. I've watched a couple hours of HD video with no overheating, no lag, and the sound is beautiful. I was concerned with overheating as it's a problem some have reported, but even going through the heavy updates to android 7 and then 7.1.1, the phone barely got warm and that was with it being in a case. Some people have complained about battery life but I've seen no problems, although if you're a heavy user it will burn through battery faster but that's to be expected.

ZTE is definitely out to make its' name in the market and it's doing a great job with this phone. Couple this beautiful phone with ZTE's 2 year warranty and flat deductible repair service for things like drops and water damage and you'll be hard pressed to find a better phone. And as an added bonus, since it's not a carrier base phone you don't have nearly as much bloatware clogging up the phone.
